Depression Help

What is Depression?

Depression, also known as clinical depression, biological depression or “the blues”, is a serious illness that is more common than you realise. One in four females and one in six males will experience it at some stage in their lifetime. But help is available and depression can be safely and effectively treated.

Depression is not simply sadness, moodiness or being in a down mood. Depression is an illness which is often not recognised, and sometimes occurs with specific anxiety syndromes. It involves feeling sad or depressed for weeks or months at a time, and usually includes feelings of hopelessness and a lack of energy.

What are the symptoms of Depression?

There are a number of particular signs to watch out for and to help identify if you or your loved one is suffering from depression:

  • Feeling sad, hopeless, despair or irritable
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in everyday activities
  • Lost appetite or weight
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Sleeping problems, such as irregular sleep or insomnia

Depression is not discriminating. Anyone can suffer from the illness. And anyone can be treated and recover from depression too.
