Domestic Violence
Many people do not know exactly what domestic violence involves.
Domestic violence is when a family member uses violent and/or abusive behaviour to control another family member or members. This includes all physical, verbal, emotional, psychological, financial, social or sexual abuse, or damage to property. In many forms, it is a crime and should not be tolerated.
Domestic violence is NEVER the victims fault
Domestic violence is NEVER justified.
If you are a victim…
Domestic violence is not about love. You have the right to live without fear and abuse. You have a right to safety. It is so important to get the help, information and support you (and your children) need, so:
- Talk to someone you trust and can talk to safely
- Call a support agency service for anonymous or personal help
- Find ways to be less controlled and isolated. For example, see friends or get a job
- Join a support group or get counselling for yourself
- Counselling may be option for the person who is abusive
- Call the police, especially if you are in immediate danger
If someone tells you they are a victim…
Your support and encouragement is critical to the person and can help them feel stronger and more able to make decisions. By being educated and informed on the issues relating to domestic violence, you can have a better understanding of how they are feeling. Ask them and discover what they plan to do.
Be a good listener, respect their decisions, and let them know the help, support and safety that are available to them.
