Eating Disorders

A marked illness

Eating disorders refers to the group of illnesses, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder, where the person has a distorted view of their body shape and weight, and changes their eating behaviour to disturbing effect.

Spot the signs

Some symptoms of eating disorders include:

  1. Dramatic weight loss in a short time period
  2. Obsession with weight
  3. Obsession with continuous exercise
  4. Frequent trips to the bathroom following meals
  5. Visible food restriction or bingeing
  6. Unusual food rituals and behaviour

How to help

The decision to get help and treat the illness is ultimately up to the person who is suffering. If you believe a loved one has an eating disorder, speak to someone you trust about your concerns. This may be a family member, teacher, social or youth worker, or a professional such as a doctor, counsellor or nutritionist.

If you decide to approach the person you believe has an eating disorder:

Choose the right time to talk
Timing can be very important when discussing such a sensitive issue. Select a moment when everyone is relaxed and more willing to accept your help.

Be informed about eating disorders
By having some general knowledge of eating disorders, you will be better equipped to deal with the possible reactions you may receive, such as denial, anger or rejection.

Offer your support
Let the person know that you are available whenever they are ready to get the help they need and that you can help them find someone to talk to. It is important to recognise that it can be scary for the person to acknowledge they have an eating disorder.

If you believe a loved one is suffering from an eating disorder, help them get the professional treatment they require.
